Entry

The door is located on Merton Street. The pavement on either side of the door is at a steep incline, but is step free. Entrance is through a small ‘inner’ door within full-size wooden double doors. These can be opened by porters on request. 

 

Unlocked during the day, locked at night (left open if a large event is happening). 

Fob required when doors are locked. Fob reader is located at a height of 120 cm to the right of the main doors, and is recessed into the wall. 

There is also a bell to call the porters who are present 24/7. This is located to the right of the main doors at a height of 115 cm.

There is an ‘exit’ button inside the lodge area to unlock the door from quad side. This is 107 cm high. 

 

Access Level

Access into Front Quad from the full-size main door is fully flat and step-free (does not require going through the lodge itself). 

Through the ‘inner’ door (door two (2)), access is not fully flat. 

 

Access to the porters lodge from the main door (door three (3)) is fully flat but not step-free. There are three (3) steps. Step one (1) is 12 cm high, 90 cm wide and 60 cm deep. Step two (2) is 18 cm high, 80 cm wide and 32 cm deep. Step three (3) is in the doorway. It is 20 cm high and 72 cm wide. There are no handrails.

Access to the porters lodge from Front Quad is fully flat but not step-free. There are two steps from door four (4) from the lodge area into Front Quad. These are 90 cm wide and 16 cm high. There are plans to ramp this entrance in summer 2020.

 

 

Full-Size Main Door

Double door frame is over 200 cm wide. 

The full-size door is fully flat and step-free.

Door is heavy.​​​​

 

 

 

 

Small Main Door 

Door frame is 86 cm wide, and step-free, but not fully flat. There is a large lip through the full-sized door.

This is 13 cm high and 32 cm deep.

Door handle is 118 cm high.

Door is heavy and not powered. 

 

 

Entrance to Porters Lodge from Main Door

Door frame is 72 cm wide and fully flat. Door is at the top of a set of stairs and is not step free. The step is 20 cm high. 

Door is usually propped open. 

Door is light. 

 

 

 

Entrance to Porters Lodge from Front Quad

Door frame is 90 cm wide and fully flat. It is not step-free. Step is 16 cm high. 

Note: there are plans to ramp this entrance in summer 2020.

Door handle is 72 cm high but usually propped open.

Access to the lodge itself is fully flat but not step-free, It is located to the right of the main door. The lodge is small  and can become crowded at peak times. 

Porter's counter is 107 cm high with a 73 cm cutaway. 

Pidges are located at a height of 70 cm or above.

 

 

 

 

 

Nearest accessible toilet is #2, located in the Cloisters.

 

 

 

 

Primary entrance in front quad. This is step-free but not usually fully flat as it is through a small ‘inner’ door within a full-size door meaning there is a large lip. This is very narrow.

The primary Hall door has an accessibility button located  to the right, at a height of 100 cm. This calls the porters to open the full-size door to eliminate the large lip making it fully flat and step-free. 

Alternative access is through Gentlemen's Commoner's Quad (see map), and is fully flat and step-free. 

Hall is unlocked during mealtimes. 

Mealtimes:

  • Breakfast 8:15-9 Mon-Fri
  • Lunch 12:30-1 Mon-Fri
  • Dinner 6:20-7 Sun-Thur, Formal Hall from 7 on Friday 
  • Brunch 11:30-12:30 Sat and Sun

 

 

External Door

Door does not fully open. This means that the pathway width is 90 cm (see photo).

Access is step-free and mostly flat although slabs are uneven at points. 

Door must be unbolted at the top and bottom by porters.

Accessibility button on the right, 100 cm high.

Door is heavy.

 

 

 

 

Entrance to Hall

Double door frame is 100 cm wide, fully flat and step-free. 

Door knob is 74 cm high. 

Door is not heavy.

 

 

 

Entrance to Buttery

Door frame is 88 cm wide, and step-free. There is a one (1) cm lip meaning that it is not fully-flat.

Door slides open, no handle.

Wide aisles.

For normal meals (not formal hall or events) food is served by counter in the buttery. Students carry their trays through to the dining hall. Formal halls are served by college staff. Buttery is currently under refurbishment [July 2019] but will be fully-flat and step-free. 

College staff are able to assist if anyone is unable to access the Buttery.

Tables are 75 cm high (63 cm to underside). Chairs can be easily moved. 

Some tables have hidden bars in the centre and at the end. These are 6 cm thick and rise 16 cm above the floor. 

There is a step up to high table which is 12 cm high. High table is 75 cm high (63 cm to underside).

Alternative Access

Entry

The alternative entrance is located on Front quad directly opposite the Porter’s Lodge.

This entrance is locked, requiring keys held by the porters and librarians. 

There are accessibility buttons both outside and inside the door to call for porters/librarians to access library. The interior button can also be used for calling librarians for assistance in accessing books.

Opening Hours: 24/7 library and porters, Librarians are present 09:00 - 18:00 (lunch break 13:00-14:00).

 

Access Level 

The alternative entrance is located on Front Quad, directly opposite the main college entrance and is between two large flowerbeds. It is step-free but not fully flat as there are cobbles leading up to the door. This entrance is locked but keys are held by porters and librarians. 

This door gives entrance to the ground floor of the library only (primarily law collections). ​​

 

 

 

Alternative Entrance

Door frame is 90 cm wide, fully flat and step-free.

Door handle is 100 cm high.

Door is light. 

There are accessibility buttons both outside and inside the door to call for porters/librarians to access library.

The aisles are relatively narrow but can be accessed. Rolling stacks can also be quite narrow. 

Librarians will fetch and deliver the relevant books to the room/desk of any student with any issues with mobility. 

Library desks are 72 cm high with a 64.5cm underbelly.

Door frame is 95 cm wide, fully flat but not step-free. 

There is one (1) step in the doorway which is 15 cm high.

 

Entrance to JCR

Door frame is 88 cm wide, fully flat but not step-free. There is one (1) step up to the doorway which is 17 cm high.

Door handle is 125 cm high. 

Door is sometimes closed, but is not usually locked. The door is not powered, and is very heavy.

 

​​​​​​Kitchenette is narrow but fully flat, and step free. Stools and small tables may block the pathway but these are light and easily moved. The sink and counters are 90 cm high but not cutaway. 

In the JCR, the furniture is crowded and can be moved which can block pathways. 

There are two (2) large tables. One table is 63 cm and underbelly is 49 cm. Another table is 72 cm high and underbelly is 59 cm.

 

 

JCR toilets are on the first floor of the staircase.

Alternative Access

Entry

The alternative entrance is located in the corner of Gentlemen's Commoner's Quad. There is a hallway kitchenette (see photo) between the entrance and the JCR. Note that door (2) is particularly narrow.

Key may need to be requested from porters. 

Access Level

The alternative access is also not usually step-free, but a ramp can be requested from the porter’s lodge. Otherwise, there are two (2) steps in the lobby between alternative access doors two (2) and three (3), each 105 cm wide. The first step is 11 cm high and 48 cm deep. The second step is 15 cm high.

 

 

Entrance from Gentlemen’s Commoner’s Quad into Lobby

Door frame is 92 cm wide. Usually this is fully flat but not step-free. There is one (1) step through the door which four (4) cm high.

Ramp can be requested from porters, making this an incline, but step-free. 

Door knob is 87 cm high, and is particularly stiff

Arch is 79 cm wide. 

 

 

Alternative entrance into JCR

Door frame is particularly narrow at 65 cm wide. 

Access is fully flat and step-free.

The TV Room is located on the first floor of Staircase 8, off Front Quad. 

Fob access required.

Access to the TV Room is fully flat but not step-free.

There is one (1) flight of 16 steps. Each step is 140 cm wide, 20 cm high, and 28 cm deep.

There is one (1) step in the doorway which is 15 cm high.

Entrance into TV Room 

Door frame is 92 cm wide, fully flat, but there is a single step in doorway which is 7 cm high.

It is located to the right at top of a staircase of 16 steps.

Door handle is 86 cm high.

Door is not heavy.

Table is 75 cm high with an underbelly of 70 cm.

Access to door two (2) is step-free and mostly flat although some stone slaps can be uneven. 

There is one (1) steep flight of stairs into the bar immediately from door two (2). There are 12 steps, each 112 cm wide, 16 cm high and 27 cm deep. Equipped with a handrail on one side.

 

External Door

Same door as entrance to hall.

Door does not fully open. This means that the pathway width is 90 cm (see photo).

Access is step-free and mostly flat although slabs are uneven at points. 

Door must be unbolted at top and bottom by porters.

There is an accessibility button to the right, 100 cm high.

Door is heavy.

 

 

 

Entrance into Staircase

Door frame is 101 cm wide.

Doorway is fully flat and step-free, but opens directly onto a flight of 12 stairs. 

Door is left open during opening hours.

 

 

 

Bar is spacious and open, and pathways are accessible.

There is a central pool table. 

Tables are set in hollows (see photos). Tables are 75 cm high with an underbelly of 72 cm. 

Fire exit is another narrow flight of stairs.

Entrance into College Bar 

Door frame is 79 cm wide, fully flat, and step-free.

Door handle is 80 cm high. 

Door is light but usually left open.

 

 

Primary entrance located in the passageway between Front Quad and the cloisters. Access is fully flat and step-free. 

Door is unlocked during opening hours (07:00-22:00).

 

 

Double door frame is 152 cm wide, although usually only has one door open measuring 75 cm. Access is fully flat and step-free.

Door handle is 118 cm high.

Doors are quite heavy. Door is on a pulley system which closes the door quite quickly.

 

 

 

 

There is a single step from the ante-chapel into main chapel which is 12.5 cm high. The main aisle is wide. 

Pews are 50 cm wide. There are places for wheelchairs in the aisle.

 

 

 

Nearest accessible toilet is #1, located in the Cloisters.

 

 

 

Entry

An outside space accessed from the main college garden onto the Auditorium roof (see map).

Closed at night or if there is bad weather.

 

Access Level

There are two flights of eight (8) stone steps. Each step is 125 cm wide, 16 cm high, and 28 cm deep.

There are steel handrails on both sides of the steps.

There is a ramp to the first level of the terrace. A stairclimber may be requested from porters to access the second level.

 

 

 

 

Large open outdoor space with a few fixed benches.

There is a steep drop near the edge of the roof terrace but this is marked with both tape on the floor and rope barriers.

 

 

 

 

 

Nearest accessible toilet is #2, located in the Auditorium.

 

 

 

Entry

The Auditorium is located on Turner Quad.

The primary route to this quad is through Small Garden off the cloisters (see map).

 

The alternative route is through the Main Garden, then across the back of Small Garden, and into Turner Quad (see map).

 

Unlocked during the day and for events. Capacity of 130.

Fob access required if locked.

 

Access Level

The primary route is neither fully-flat or step-free. There are two (2) uneven stone steps into the Small Garden from the passageway between Front Quad and the cloisters. These are 89 cm wide and 16 cm high. Stone slab pavement in garden is uneven.

 

The alternative route is step-free. The gravel path in the Main Garden means that it is not fully flat.

 

 

 

 

Exterior Doors to Auditorium Foyer

Double automatic and powered doors, over 200 cm wide.

Access is fully flat and step-free.

 

 

 

Door from Foyer into Small Lobby

Door frame is 117 cm wide, fully flat and step-free.

Door handle is 177 cm high.

Door is heavy but often propped open for events.

 

 

 

 

Entrance to Auditorium

Door frame is 109 cm wide.There is a panel to the left of the door which can be opened to make this access wider.

There is one guest room on the main college site which has been used to house people with disabilities. 

There are three (3) accessible study-bedrooms on the ground floor of Liddon Quad (off-site).

There is one (1) room on the main college site adapted for those with hearing impairments, installed with a tactile pillow and pager system to alert residents of fire alarms. 

 

 

 

 

This is located on Gentleman Commoners Quad. It has step-free access, and has a ramped entrance. 

 

 

 

 

Accessible study-bedroom room located on the ground floor of Liddon Quad.

It is purpose built with ensuite facilities. A carer could be accommodated nearby and is linked by a telephone.

Ensuite has a door frame which is fully flat and step free.

Door handle is 78 cm high.

Sink is 73 cm high.
